When this companion book was announced a few months back, I was pretty excited. As a fan of the series, I had an impression that this book would feature a bit of lore, perhaps even concept art of some of the main characters. Although this book was a bit different than I expected, the sneak preview from Viz made me really want to pick up a copy:
Mystery Shack is an online shop for and by fans, with merchandise from shows such as Gravity Falls and Over the Garden Wall. According to the company’s page, they work with artists, as well as other companies to make their products. The owner of the Mystery Shack, Micheal, works primarily as a one-man team, sometimes getting extra help from family during peak seasons.
I first saw their replica of Star’s wand from a show I like called Star Vs. The Forces of Evil on Amazon, but found that it was a little out of my budget at of time and put off purchasing for a bit. Though I came across the Mystery Shack’s web page and found the same product on there for a better price. I also got a coupon with an additional discount by becoming a member and getting points!
They Both Die at The End by Adam Silvera is what you would expect out of a novel with this title, but offers a lot more than what readers may anticipate.
I thought this novel would be at least a little grim, perhaps even similar to Marcus Zusak’s The Book Thief in the matter-of-fact way it addresses death. This book does have its sad moments, yet at the same time, it is also uplifting and hopeful and teaches readers to cherish their lives.
What is OwlCrate?
OwlCrate is a monthly subscription box that I came across through Bookcon and YouTube. It’s aimed for Young Adult and Middle Grade reader fans. According to the Owl Crate website, each box contains one novel and three to five items based on a monthly theme. A few examples of past themes are Epic Adventures, Lost in the Bookstore, and Get Inspired.
This post does contain spoilers for the June 2019 Themed box. Read more if you’d like to continue!
About The Event
For its 2019 event, AnimeNEXT continued its fourth year in its (somewhat new) Atlantic City, New Jersey location! It moved from its humble location in Somerset, New Jersey once attendees outgrew the con center. This was my ninth consecutive year attending this event. According to Animecons.com, there were about 11,000 attendees during last year’s event and this number seemed to increase this year, especially on Saturday. However, I heard from some folks that attendance may have taken a slight dip this year.
I was a vendor at Nezumicon 2019. How was it? Well..
I attended Clovercon 2019 as a vendor again this year. It’s a one day convention that takes place in the 4-H Center in Bridgewater, New Jersey.
Quite a few books by Neal Shusterman have very dark premises. Despite this, the books are not dark to the extent of being edgy. Many of his books are made from possible ‘what-if’ scenarios humans may face that are a bit extraordinary , and even a bit shocking.
In the first chapter of this book, we are introduced to a quirky family and many of the flaws of the main family are out in the open. The first chapter was one of the most memorable I’ve read in a long time, perhaps even all semester, out of the dozen or YA books I was required to pick up. (To be honest, I did so much reading over the past few months, I lost track of the exact amount). Why was the first chapter so memorable?
The Hello Kitty Cafe truck currently offers over a dozen products. Most of the reviews I stumbled across were about the food. However, I was really curious about seeing the quality of the merchandise in person.
This is a continuation of my previous post ,which is about my experience on the truck.
I purchased a t-shirt, my mother bought me the popcorn lunch box, and a friend picked up a few cookies and one of the bow-shaped bottles of water. I had about a $25 budget and went about $3 over with my purchase. My mother also picked up one of the 18 ounce thermoses for my younger cousin.
Popcorn Lunch Box:
The lunch box tin is a bit small and compact. It features an adorable design on the front and back, as well as the sides! It is sturdy and I plan on using it for storage.
As for the popcorn, there are little colorful sprinkles on it, and you mainly taste the sweet coating. There’s a faint buttery flavor in some bites-. Though at times, the combination of sprinkles and the coating make the popcorn taste a bit like birthday cake. I was a little disappointed after discovering that popcorn was a bit stale and the portions were on the smaller side. The popcorn is an adorable twist on kettle corn, though. I would recommend purchasing this only if you mainly want to keep the lunch box as a souvenir. I wanted the popcorn to be a bit fresher, and wanted more of an even mix of the buttery and sweet flavor. I like the concept of this, just not really the flavor and freshness.
This t-shirt is simple–and I love it! The design still shows off the adorable aesthetic of the food truck and Hello Kitty. The shirts do run rather small. I’m normally a large in men’s shirts and an XL in women’s shirts. I purchased an XXL and it fits me perfectly. If you go to this truck, I’d suggest getting at least one size above your regular size, or even two sizes up. The shirt is made out of 100% cotton and it does shrink quite a bit after going in the wash.
Water Bottle, Thermos, and Cookies
I do not have photos available of these products. My favorite item among the three is the eighteen ounce thermos. It is very study and would pair well with the lunch box. The water bottle was smaller than expected and appears to have about eight ounces of water. I’d suggest getting the bottle mainly as a souvenir, much like the lunch box. During this truck’s event, the bottle was bow-shaped and had little eight-bit Hello Kitty characters on it.
My friend really enjoyed the three piece cookie set. According to my friend, the cookies were pre-packaged and fresh. My mother loved the way the cookies looked–she even mentioned that they looked too good to eat! The designs on the cookies were very neat and well-made.
Products I’d Love To See on the Truck:
Sanrio is well-known for its stationary. In the future, it would be great to purchase stationary from the truck in the future, especially if it comes in sets! I went on the Sanrio website and saw notebooks that were shaped like beverages and had straw-shaped pens. Above is just one of the designs, featuring the cute character, Cinnamoroll! If the truck had similar items in sets, I would love to add them to my collection.
